Alternative uses for tins no.6

Went to see a physiotherapist this afternoon, who recommended some exercises to release tension in my IT (iliotibial) band:

"A foam roller is good if you have one of those," he said. "But otherwise you can do a lot by just rolling a tin of beans up and down the outside of the leg".

As it happens I had been thinking of getting a foam roller. But the latter sounds a little more "me".

That's not the only use that tins have for health and fitness though - this article in The Guardian from a couple of years back suggests using them for a "baked-bean plank". Not to be confused with the somewhat impractical way you might be served your meal in a restaurant that's trying too hard to be cool/quirky (#wewantplates), it involves adopting a plank position with just one arm, while using the other to move a tin of beans across the floor. Or you could try a "tin-can deadlift", in which you use two tins to add a bit of extra weight to your squats.

Obviously a set of proper weights would make it far more of a work-out, but the tin option is certainly cheaper, and as a bonus you've got the pefect source of protein with which to refuel yourself when you're done.
